Prince Chichibu Memorial Sport Museum and Library

The Prince Chichibu Memorial Sport Museum and Library is Japan’s only integrated sport museum and library. The younger brother of the Showa Emperor, Crown Prince Chichibunomiya Yasuhito (1902-1953) was widely known as the “Prince of Sports,” and the museum was opened in 1959 to commemorate his service to sports in Japan and to contribute to the advancement of sports. The Prince Chichibu Memorial Sport Museum is currently preparing to relocate and reopen at the planned new Chichibunomiya Rugby Stadium (tentative name). In January 2022, we opened the Prince Chichibu Memorial Sport Gallery inside the Japan National Stadium, where we hold special and collection exhibitions centered around the personal belongings of Prince Chichibu. We also collaborate with other organizations to hold special exhibitions at external venues. In recent years, we have also been working toward building a sports digital archive by digitizing our collection of exhibits and promoting the archiving and networking of sports-related materials.
