Department of Information & International Relations

Collecting and analyzing sports-related information from Japan and overseas.

In accordance with the objectives set by the Sport Basic Plan and the Basic Act on Sport, the Department of Information and International Relations is the core organization that handles information needed to promote sports in Japan. The Department integrates and analyzes domestic and international information as well as evaluates and makes proposals on Japan’s sport policies and measures.Policy information

Collect and analyze information related to domestic and international sports policies and programs from various perspectives, and plan and propose programs for developing the sport community in Japan.
● Collect and analyze information on promoting sport participation among children, young people, women and the disabled
● Research on the ways to support athletes' career development

International cooperation

Develop foundations to promote international cooperation activities through sports
● Collect and analyze information on domestic and international relevant projects and groups
● Networking with UN agencies
● Dispatch staff to the United Nations Office on Sport for Development and Peace

International collaboration

Develop international collaboration programs to foster talents, exchange personnel, and share information on the international situation with overseas government-related sports organizations
● Develop collaboration frameworks, plan and implement concrete activities
● Hold international conferences and joint workshops

Support for international sporting events

Support Japan’s bids for and hosting of international sports events, such as the Olympic and Paralympic Games
● Support preparation of hosting plans
● Disseminate information to international sports community
● Collect and analyze information on international sports events
● Networking with international organizations

Policy Research

Research the current trend of sport policy about elite and community sport and international development through sport.
● Implement information collection and analysis projects during international sport events including the Olympic and Paralympic Games
● Provide sport policy information to relevant organizations
● Publish annual reports of current competitiveness of sports in Japan

London-based research and networking

Using the centers in London and at Loughborough University, the Department fosters sports professionals, contributes to the successful holding of international sports events held in Japan, researches sports systems and policies, collects and disseminates information through these activities, and strengthens networks with stakeholders.
● Support and collect information on overseas coach training systems
● Continuous field research on the legacy of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games

Sport for Tomorrow (SFT) Programme of international contribution through sports 

SFT Programme is one of the Japanese government's commitments to leveraging the power of sport to create a brighter future for people throughout the world. It aims to expand sporting values and the Olympic and Paralympic Movement to people of all generations with more than 10 million people in over 100 counties, including developing countries from 2014 to 2020. The Department is responsible for managing the SFT Consortium Secretariat and implements various projects primarily in developing countries.

● Assist to organise sporting events
● Study and implement new models of international contribution through sport
